Wild Roots Forest School - Santa Barbara
Forest Kindergarten Program
Application Open for Sept 4, 2019 - June 12, 2020 program year
Education means "to lead out." We seem to think of this as leading away from childhood, but we could think of it as eliciting the wisdom and talents of childhood itself.
Wild Roots Forest Kindergarten class is for 5 and 6 year olds. Our Kindergarten class is enrolled full time, five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 8:45am-1:45pm.
Children must be at least 5 years of age by September for the Kindergarten class.
Lead Teacher: Jennifer Sepulveda
Assistant teacher: Amalia Smith Hale
Applications received by April 1, 2019 receive priority for the 2019-2020 program year, with rolling enrollment thereafter as long as space is available. However, early application is advised (February-March).

(Wild Roots also offers a mixed age preschool program for 2.5 to 6 year olds, which offers 1 to 5 day per week enrollment. Learn more about our mixed age program here.)
Wild Roots program philosophy details the richness of how our wild landscapes nurture and encourage the healthy development of our children (learn more here). The kindergarten class deepens, in all aspects, direct experiences with the land and with each other, putting the developmental needs of the child in the forefront. The 5 and 6 year old child is ready for taking on meaningful and concrete tasks, remembering what came the day before and often arriving with a plan for deepening the previous day's experience. Our days provide a rhythm and offerings similar to those the mixed aged classes enjoy:
- large blocks of free play
- tracking (animals, weather patterns, seasonal patterns, etc.)
- crafting (sewing, whittling, basketry, plant dyeing, finger knitting, etc.)
- arts (drawing, painting, and creating our own art materials from the land)
- Spanish language
- seasonal songs and poems
- storytelling and plays
